Studying Abroad

The shaping and implementation of TUM's internationalisation process enjoys the collective support of the senior university management, all the faculties and the administration. This is expressed in the increased numbers of exchange visits, new partnerships and programs. 20% of TUM's students, who total more than 20,000, come from other countries. It is the aim of the TUM to raise the mobility of German students to a similarly high level and to offer every student the opportunity of spending a term or completing an internship abroad.

About 500 undergraduates have participated in the exchange programs offered by the TUM every year so far. Since October 2005, the TUM exchange programs have undergone some restructuring:

1. Erasmus program (period of study plus work experience in Europe)
2. TUMexchange (period of study outside Europe: in the USA, Asia, Latin America, etc.)
3. LAOTSE (period of study combined with an internship in Asia)
4. Double Degree (at partner universities worldwide)

With the Erasmus program, any TUM student who shows a satisfactory academic performance can incorporate a term at a university in another European country to supplement his/her course of studies. This is backed up by the three other exchange programs supported by the TUM, which enable selected students to study for a term or two at one of TUM's reputed associate universities outside Europe.

As a student at the TUM you benefit from a close-knit network of partner universities: TUM has now signed cooperation agreements with more than 140 universities and has pledged to exchange students with 250 of them in Europe alone. The following pages of our website will provide information on the exchange programs, matters relating to the recognition of these programs, funding schemes for your stay abroad and much more besides. This may also be followed up by a personal consultation, on request.
