Welcome to the Department of Informatics!

40 Years of Informatics in München

The Department of Informatics looks back on 40 years of Informatics: 1967, the first lecture in Informatics (computer science) was held at the TU Müchen. This also meant the initiation of the Major program in “Information Processing” – the first of its kind in Germany. On October 26th, 2007, the Department of Informatics will be celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Back then, the TUM-Informatics played a leading role – today, it is one of the biggest faculties in Germany. In 19 research units more than 30 professors research in core areas of computer science, engineering areas, information systems, medical and Bioinformatics.

Interested students may choose from a wide variety of study programs in Informatics, Bioinformatics, or Information Systems as well as Didactics of Informatics. Particularly dedicated students have the opportunity to take part in a summer or winter academy or they may choose one of four elite Masters programs. The Department of Informatics at TUM was one of the first institutions implementing the Bachelor-/Master-Program in accordance with the Bologna-process.

The TUM includes several renowned engineering and natural science departments as well as the Department for Economic Studies. The Department of Informatics cooperates in several interdisciplinary research projects with these other departments. In addition, the Department of Informatics also values its tight bonds and immediate transfer of knowledge with the industry and many businesses. This also provides outstanding opportunities for the students.

Since October 2006, the TUM is accredited as one of three “Elite-Universities” in Germany. The Department of Informatics has also been ranked outstandingly in several university-rankings, such as published in “Focus”, “Spiegel”, and “Karriere”. Additionally, the TUM-Informatics has also been rated as one of the foremost departments in the country, particularly in the focus points of study situation, IT-infrastructure, research funds, and reputation of the professors.
