abacus The abacus (from the Greek abákion) is the symbol of TUM Informatics.

The abacus is the oldest computing device known to mankind. In many cultures it accompanied the emergence of a place-valued number system. Two appliances created by the Greeks and Romans have even been reserved: the salamantina computing board made of marble (in the National Museum of Athens) and a handy Roman device made of bronze (in the Terme Museum of Rome).

Shown here is the number 1967, the year in which the informatics was founded at the Technische Universität München.
